Maribela is a special name. It means Lalibela in Amharic. The term literally means ‘honey eater’ . This name was given to King Lalibela, a saint and the builder of the city and the famous churches. Legend has it that on the day of his birth many bees indicated his future greatness by surrounding him.

We invest a portion of our profits in local reforestation initiatives, transforming barren landscapes into thriving ecosystems. Since 2017, our team has revitalized an 800sqm plot near the hotel, planting 2,000 trees and drought-tolerant flowering plants. This evolving mountain park, just a short walk from the hotel, invites guests to relax and immerse themselves in the scenic beauty.

All of the staff at Maribela Hotel come from the local vicinity and many come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The hotel has trained and assisted them, and in turn, they have brought great energy and enthusiasm to the work. At Maribela, we want to be as environmentally conscious as we can, and as well as investing in the local community, we intend to improve our local environment. We already spend a portion of our profits to assist local reforestation efforts. So far, we've taken ownership of an 800sqm barren piece of land in the local vicinity and our staff have volunteered to plant trees and revegetate the area. Since 2017, we've planted 2000 trees and other drought tolerant flowering plants.
